Snowmobiles, snowboards, trampolines, All Terrain Vehicles (ATVs), bicycles, motorbikes, ice skates, exercise equipment and other defective recreational products cause thousands of injuries every year.  These injuries can require immediate emergency room treatment, and may be long term injuries, affecting a person for the rest of their life.

Common Defects in Recreational Products

Snowmobiles can come with wiring malfunctions that cause engines to explode while in use, and may have steering defects that can result in loss of control over the vehicle, and consequently, accidents.  Beside these defects, defective throttles, defective brakes, unstable suspensions, and other flaws can also lead to injuries.

Trampolines are used by millions of children across the country and are a great source of fun.  However, some can conceal hidden manufacturing and design defects that can lead to emergency room visits.  A lack of proper enclosures can cause trampoline jumpers to fly off the trampoline. The injuries resulting from such falls can be extremely serious, including head and brain injuries, eye and facial injuries, fractures and broken bones.

Bicycling is an eco-friendly way to travel and attracts more and more users every year. These harmless looking vehicles, however, can also conceal hidden defects that may not be visible at the time of purchase. Motorcyclists can also be prone to injuries if there are tire, handlebar or design defects.

All Terrain Vehicles (ATVs)

All Terrain Vehicles, or ATVs, can be used on a wider range of terrain than many other vehicles. These vehicles are operated much like a motorcycle, and have become increasingly popular with teenagers. They have also been the focus of immense controversy due to the alarming rate of accidents, injuries and fatalities associated with the vehicles.  Many of these injuries involve the rolling over of the ATV, in which case the operator can easily be trapped beneath thousands of pounds of pressure - an ATV can weigh up to 2500 pounds.  Injuries associated with ATVs include crushing injuries that require amputations and head and spinal cord injuries. Although these vehicles look like playthings, it's very important to remember that they are not.  Injuries can be reduced if manufacturers make sure that ATVs meant for children are sized appropriately.
